The Pastore Maremmano Abruzzese, Maremma Sheepdog, originated in Italy where it has been used as a flock guardian for sheep and goats for over two thousand years. It was first imported into the United States for livestock guarding purposes in the early 1970's. After losing my goat, Deerie, to a mountain lion attack I decided to purchase a Maremma to guard the goats and sheep. They are bred to bond so tightly to their livestock that they will defend them against predators large and small including lions, bears, coyotes, stray dogs, even wolves (when they can work in groups). Maremmas are bred to be courageous but not aggressive and thus are a good choice for a livestock guard dog that needs to be sociable with humans, especially children. Vita came from Desert Mountain Alpacas located in Mansfield, GA. Her mother is an Italian import and her father a first generation Italian import. It will take a while for Vita to become a capable guard dog but her services will be worth the wait! Visit the Maremma Sheepdog Club for more information on this amazing breed.
